Dr. Sara Awartani is an Assistant Professor in the Department of American Culture at the University of Michigan, with affiliations in Latina/o Studies and Arab and Muslim American Studies programs. Her interdisciplinary historical research examines 20th-century US social movements, interracial coalitions, and state surveillance practices.
Her forthcoming book, 'Solidarities of Liberation, Visions of Empire', analyzes connections between Palestinian and Puerto Rican liberation movements within contexts of American imperial power. Research explores how the United States monitored and suppressed transnational freedom movements through policing and legal frameworks.
Publications appear in peer-reviewed forums including Radical History Review and Middle East Report. Her work has received support from Ford Foundation and academic associations focused on ethnic studies and cross-regional solidarity movements.
