Sanjeev Gupta

Sanjeev Gupta, M.B.,B.S., M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Medicine (Hepatology) and Department of Pathology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He holds the Eleazar & Feige Reicher Chair in Translational Medicine. His research focuses on liver regeneration mechanisms, hepatic stem cell biology, and DNA damage response pathways involving ATM, with applications in therapeutics and translational medicine. Gupta employs cell transplantation, animal models, and advanced molecular techniques to study liver diseases including acetaminophen toxicity, Wilson’s disease, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Education & Training: Medical Degree from Sardar Patel Medical College, University of Rajasthan. Residencies at Jacobi Medical Center, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, and Hammersmith Hospital. Fellowships at Hammersmith Hospital, Los Angeles County and University of Southern California, and Jacobi Medical Center.

Research Interests: Investigates liver regeneration across development stages, studying cell type-specific contributions and stem cell roles. Explores DNA damage responses (ATM pathways), drug/toxin effects, and therapeutic strategies like cell/gene therapy. His lab uses decellularized biological scaffolds for liver tissue engineering and employs metabolomics for directed stem cell differentiation. Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to advance translational therapies.

Key Findings: Demonstrated paracrine signaling roles in hepatocyte transplantation, identified copper and arsenic toxicity mechanisms via ATM pathways, and developed models of Wilson’s disease and liver fibrosis. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications, using established drugs to interrogate mechanisms and guide therapies.

Grants & Collaborations: Leads projects integrating microarray/sequencing with human tissue analyses. Collaborates with Einstein investigators and institutions globally. Focuses on translational tools like engineered liver constructs and drug repurposing.
