Sangram Shirke is a Lecturer and PhD researcher at the Umeå School of Architecture (Umeå University), serving as Programme Director. His research focuses on architecture and urban development as socio-cultural practices, emphasizing cultural diversity in dense urban environments. He co-leads the research group Making Architecture Politically and leads projects like In-between the lines: an exploration of the street as a place of cultural negotiation (2024) and Making the Difference: Izmir (2022).
As an educator, he has taught at all levels for 12 years, supervising theses and leading design studios in global contexts (Bombay, Izmir, Berlin). He integrates social-cultural dimensions into design pedagogy through context-based research. Notable projects include collaborations with the New European Bauhaus and exhibitions at the Venice Biennale 2021 and British Academy Summer Showcase 2022.
He actively participates in research initiatives like Infrastructures of Care: Architecture, Livable Lives and Just Environments. Current leadership includes a programme revision effort to modernize architectural education at UMA.
