Sandrine Barrey

Sandrine Barrey is a Maître de conférences Hors Classe (Associate Professor) in Sociology at Toulouse Jean-Jaurès University, where she teaches in the Department of Sociology. She is a permanent researcher at LISST-CNRS (Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Solidarity, Societies, Territories), with significant administrative responsibilities including serving as the departmental reference for high-level athletes and PASS/LAS students.

Her research bridges rarely intersecting areas of sociology including markets, consumption, food, scientific controversies, and risks. She specializes in controversial agri-food markets, particularly examining aquaculture biotechnological innovations and meat substitutes in Europe. Her work analyzes how market actors qualify these new products through legal, ethical, and economic frameworks, while investigating control regulations and autonomous regulations within market systems.

Barrey leads two major research initiatives: the Labex Project "MAVRIC" (2024-2025) and Work Package 2 of the ANR CoMEATted project (2024-2027), which focuses on controversial markets for meat substitutes across Europe. Her research follows the tradition of Jean-Daniel Reynaud, examining power structures and spaces for consumer-citizen expression within controversial food markets.

Her scholarly contributions span multiple disciplines with publications addressing biotechnology markets, food controversies, consumption practices, and market regulations. Her work frequently appears in sociology journals and interdisciplinary publications focusing on food systems and market dynamics.

Barrey has held numerous advisory roles including membership on the High Council of Biotechnologies (2014-2019), the Scientific Council of Agroparitech (2019-2022), and the Scientific Council of the Centre d'information sur les viandes (2016-2018). She previously served as Deputy Director of the Department of Sociology from 2020-2022.

Her academic journey began with a PhD in Sociology from Université Toulouse II - Le Mirail in 2004, followed by positions at INRA and increasingly senior roles at Toulouse Jean-Jaurès University, culminating in her current position as Maître de conférences Hors Classe with HDR (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches).
