Sandra Amaral, MD, MHS is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania, affiliated with the Perelman School of Medicine. She serves as a faculty member in the Division of Nephrology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Medical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program, and Medical Director of the Vascular Composite Allograft Program. Her research focuses on improving equitable access to care and long-term health outcomes for children, adolescents, and young adults with chronic kidney disease and transplantation.
Education: BA from Wesleyan University (1992), MD from Medical College of Pennsylvania-Hahnemann University (2000), and MHS from Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health (2005).
Research interests include applying mobile health technologies for behavioral change, epidemiological studies on population health, and health equity. She leads three multi-center NIH-funded studies and collaborates on clinical trials, cohort studies, and mixed-methods research. Dr. Amaral advocates for pediatric kidney disease policy through leadership roles in the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology and UNOS/OPTN.
