Sanborn Tenney

Sanborn Tenney was Vassar College's inaugural Professor of Natural History (1865-1868) and later taught at Williams College until his death in 1877. A graduate of Amherst College and Harvard University, he studied under Louis Agassiz and maintained a creationist perspective opposing Darwinian evolution.

Research focused on zoological classification, geological formations, and natural history education. Publications emphasized systematic observation and Christian interpretations of natural phenomena. Authored influential textbooks used in science education nationwide.

Textbooks integrated detailed biological classification with theological perspectives, promoting scientific observation skills while rejecting evolutionary theory. Works emphasized divine creation in biological diversity and geological formations.
