Samuel Rodriguez

Samuel Rodriguez is an Adjunct Professor in the Illustration Program at California College of the Arts (CCA), where he contributes to the education of emerging visual artists. His work bridges academic instruction and professional practice in illustration, typography, and public art.

His creative research centers on visual storytelling through portraiture, figurative scenes, and typographic expression. Influenced by his roots in San José and Bay Area culture, Rodriguez blends faces, lettering, and abstract forms to create narratives that reflect identity, community, and cultural fusion. His artistic approach is categorized into three themes: Nouns (portraits), Verbs (figurative scenes), and Typography (etc.), emphasizing expressive color, detail, and cultural context.

Rodriguez has an extensive professional portfolio, with work featured in major publications such as The New Yorker, Los Angeles Times, and Politico, and clients including Adobe, Microsoft, Levi's, and the World Health Organization. His public murals, exhibited across California and internationally, engage local communities and celebrate cultural heritage.

He has also contributed to editorial projects, animated GIFs, book illustrations (e.g., Human 2.0), and large-scale installations at institutions like the Oakland Museum of California and San José Museum of Art. Rodriguez earned his BFA in Illustration from California College of the Arts and has been a full-time professional artist since 2012, with prior part-time practice beginning in 2002. He remains based in his hometown of San José, California, integrating local identity into a globally recognized practice.
