About
Dr Samuel Greess is a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, Queen Mary University of London. He is a core member of the Space, Solar, and Astrophysical Plasmas research group led by Dr Chris Chen, with active collaborations at the LArge Plasma Device (LAPD) facility in Los Angeles.
Dr Greess completed his undergraduate studies at Carnegie Mellon University followed by graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under Professor Jan Egedal. His doctoral research centered on experimental plasma physics within the Terrestrial Reconnection EXperiment (TREX) group, investigating magnetic reconnection in low-collisionality plasmas to model solar wind-magnetosphere interactions.
His research integrates laboratory experimentation with advanced simulations using LANL's VPIC code, emphasizing hardware-specific modeling of vessel walls and geometric constraints. Current work expands into Alfvenic turbulence through LAPD collaborations, building upon his foundational expertise in magnetic reconnection phenomena observed in space physics contexts.
Scientific Awards
- Student Fellowship from Los Alamos National Laboratory's Center for Space and Earth Sciences (CSES) (2019)
Dr Greess has not supervised any doctoral students but maintains critical research partnerships with Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His funding includes the LANL CSES fellowship supporting his VPIC simulation work on cylindrical plasma configurations.
He operates within Queen Mary's Space, Solar, and Astrophysical Plasmas group while sustaining active participation in the TREX experimental team at UW-Madison and ongoing collaborations with LANL researchers Bill Daughton and Adam Stanier.
