Samuel Gorovitz is a Professor of Philosophy at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences. Former Dean of Arts and Sciences, he pioneered work in medical ethics and public policy. He has advised governments and institutions globally, including the World Health Organization and NIH. His research focuses on ethical dilemmas in medicine, healthcare governance, and moral conflict resolution. Educated at MIT (B.S., 1960) and Stanford University (Ph.D., 1963), he has authored over 130 articles and books, including Doctors’ Dilemmas and Drawing the Line. He serves on the New York State Task Force on Life and the Law and was a founding director of the Renée Crown Honors Program. Awards include the Hastings Center Fellowship and an honorary D.Sc. from SUNY (2016).
Teaching highlights include courses on bioethics, philosophy, and interdisciplinary humanities. He has held visiting roles at Yale, Cornell, and Cleveland Marshall College of Law. His work bridges philosophy, medicine, and public policy, emphasizing ethical frameworks for complex societal challenges.
