University of OsloAbout
Samuel Andrew Hardy is an Adjunct Professor at the American University of Rome and an Honorary Research Associate at University College London's Institute of Archaeology. He also holds an Honorary fellowship at the University of Oslo, where he contributes to teaching courses on heritage and conflict. His academic work centers on cultural heritage in conflict zones, particularly the illicit trafficking of antiquities and its connections to political violence.
Hardy's educational background includes:
- DPhil in Law Studies, University of Sussex (2005-2011)
- Studies in Modern Greek Language and Culture, University of Ioannina (2009-2010)
- MSc in Social Research Methods, University of Sussex (2004-2005)
- MA in Cultural Heritage Studies, University College London (2003-2004)
- BA in Archaeology and Prehistory, University of Sheffield (2000-2003)
His research critically examines the law, ethics, and politics of archaeological work in conflict economies, with emphasis on destruction of cultural property, looting, theft, forgery, and heritage propaganda. He pioneers open-source research methodologies to trace conflict antiquities trafficking networks across Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Ukraine, Libya, and Yemen, while fact-checking damage claims in occupied territories and internationally unrecognized administrations. Hardy's work reveals how cultural property crimes intersect with narcotics trafficking, arms smuggling, and political violence.
Analysis of his publications (2019-2025) shows consistent focus on transnational antiquities trafficking networks spanning the Eastern Mediterranean, West Asia, North Africa, and Eastern Europe. His studies investigate metal-detecting looting techniques, online social organization of trafficking, and conflict financing through heritage crime. Geographically, his research covers Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Ukraine, Libya, Yemen, and Southeast Asia, with methodological innovation in digital data analysis and netnography to expose criminal networks operating across conflict zones.
Hardy leads the Heritage Experience Initiative project examining illicit trafficking and political violence across three regional axes: the Eastern Mediterranean (looting and crime interconnections), West Asia and North Africa (conflict antiquities and propaganda), and North Africa/Western Mediterranean (transnational networks bridging conflict zones and markets). He actively collaborates with the Circolo Gianicolense research network in Rome's Gianicolo area.
