Associate Professor · Neurobiology of speech perception
University of Maryland, College ParkAbout
Samira Anderson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at the University of Maryland's College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. With clinical audiology background and dual Ph.D. in Audiology/Hearing Sciences, she leads the Hearing Brain Lab at the Brain and Behavior Institute.
- Neurobiology of speech perception
- Learning-associated neural plasticity
- Aging auditory system
- Hearing loss rehabilitation
- Temporal processing deficits
Her groundbreaking research combines electrophysiology, imaging, and perceptual assessments to study auditory processing across the lifespan. Recent NIH-funded work ($2.88M) focuses on developing brain-aware hearing devices, while a $8M NIH grant supports multidisciplinary aging research.
Notable scientific contributions include:
- Discovering aging-related neural timing delays
- Demonstrating training-induced neural plasticity
- Elucidating subcortical-cortical speech processing interactions
- Advancing frequency-following response analysis
As an educator, she teaches advanced audiology courses and mentors across degree levels, integrating clinical experience with scientific research. Her lab collaborates with Neuroscience and Cognitive Science programs, Maryland Academy of Audiology, and Acoustical Society of America.
