Samir P. Kanani, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine, based at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD.
Dr. Kanani earned his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin (1991-1995), graduating summa cum laude with a minor in biology. He received his M.D. from the University of Texas Medical School in 1999, completed a transitional internship at Lehigh Valley Hospital (1999-2000), and finished his Radiation Oncology residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center (2000-2004) where he served as Chief Resident from 2002-2004.
His clinical expertise spans prostate, brain, lung, esophageal, head and neck, and gastrointestinal cancers, with specialization in advanced radiation techniques including brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), and proton therapy. He emphasizes integrating technological innovation with compassionate patient-centered care to optimize treatment outcomes and provide emotional support throughout cancer journeys.
Dr. Kanani has been recognized as a Washington Top Doctor by Washingtonian magazine, most recently in 2023, and has presented at national meetings including ASTRO, ARS, RSNA, and ASCO.
At Inova Schar Cancer Institute, he served as Co-Director of the Stereotactic Radiosurgery Program and Chief of Prostate Brachytherapy, leading the development of multi-dimensional genitourinary clinical programs, particle therapy, and spine radiosurgery initiatives while providing radiation oncology services at MPTC during 2017-2019.
