Samara Smith is Associate Professor of American Studies at SUNY Old Westbury's School of Arts and Sciences. She holds an M.F.A. in Integrated Media Arts from Hunter College and researches documentary media, new media narratives, and community-engaged art practices.
Her creative scholarship explores locative media, augmented reality, and participatory documentary forms that engage public spaces and community narratives. Projects include GPS-responsive audio tours, crowd-sourced photo mapping, and VR installations examining urban environments.
Publications investigate digital literacy development, community engagement through documentary practice, and innovative pedagogies for media education. Her work has been exhibited at Queens Museum, Hammer Museum, and New York Transit Museum.
