About
Salla Atkins is Professor of Health Sciences at Tampere University's Faculty of Social Sciences, specializing in social protection, health equity, and tuberculosis care. She leads research on social determinants of health and health system interventions in diverse global contexts including Finland, South Africa, Mozambique, and Nigeria.
Her research program investigates how social and economic factors influence health outcomes, with particular focus on tuberculosis care cascades, migration health, and climate change impacts on health systems. She employs mixed-methods approaches including qualitative studies, systematic reviews, and conceptual framework development to address health inequities.
Atkins' extensive publication portfolio demonstrates consistent focus on health equity since 2022. Recent works examine tuberculosis care pathways, vaccine acceptance in humanitarian settings, health impacts of climate change, and waste management interventions. Her research combines empirical fieldwork with policy analysis across diverse geographical contexts, with emerging emphasis on pandemic responses and post-crisis recovery.
