Salah Hassan is a Professor of English and core faculty in the Muslim Studies Program and Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities at Michigan State University (MSU). He holds leadership roles, including serving as Director of Global Studies in Arts and Humanities (2020–2023) and Interim Director (2019–2020). His research focuses on postcolonial literature, anticolonial intellectual movements, and Arab/Muslim North American studies. He co-founded the Muslim Subjects blog (2011) to explore diasporic and self-representation themes, funded by an SSRC grant. He co-curated art exhibits like RASHID & ROSETTA and produced documentaries on Muslim communities in the U.S.
He teaches courses such as Postcolonial Studies and Beyond and 20th Century Novel in English. His work has been recognized with the 2022–2023 Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award. Hassan also contributed to a Templeton Religion Trust grant (2022) for a project on Islamic architecture and interfaith relations.
His research bridges media representation critiques, migration studies, and global cultural politics. Recent projects include documentary films on Muslim American experiences and academic editing on postcolonial theory.
