Sakis Gekas is Associate Professor and Hellenic Heritage Foundation Chair of Modern Greek History at York University, with joint appointments in the Department of History and Department of Humanities. He coordinates the Hellenic Studies Program and leads the HHF Greek Canadian Archives project.
Education includes PhD from University of Essex (2004), MA from University of Essex (1999), and BA from Ionian University, Corfu (1998).
Research Focus: Economic and social history of modern Greece and the Mediterranean, British colonialism in the Ionian Islands, Greek diaspora communities (particularly in Canada), and transnational dimensions of the Greek Revolution. His monograph Xenocracy: State, Class, and Colonialism in the Ionian Islands, 1815-1864 examines British colonial administration.
Professional Leadership: Treasurer of the Modern Greek Studies Association, President of the Hellenic Canadian Academic Association of Ontario, and Principal Investigator for the Greek Canadian History Project. Organizes Community Conversations Series events for LA&PS.
Accepting new graduate students for supervision in modern Greek and Mediterranean history.
