Dr. Saifur Rahman is the Joseph R. Loring Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech. He earned his BS in Electrical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, MS from Stony Brook University (1975), and PhD from Virginia Tech (1978). He joined Virginia Tech in 1979 after roles at Texas A&M University and a formative internship at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
His research focuses on energy systems, including renewable energy, smart grids, and energy policy. He founded Virginia Tech's Advanced Research Institute and Center for Energy and the Global Environment. Rahman is an IEEE Life Fellow and recipient of the IEEE Millennium Medal.
Rahman has delivered over 100 energy-related lectures across 46 countries in 2020, emphasizing global outreach. He advises students to connect coursework with broader passions and 'think outside the box.' His academic journey began at Stony Brook, where he cultivated teaching and research skills under Professors Ken Short and C.T. Chen.
