S. Ravi P. Silva

Prof. S. Ravi P. Silva is a Distinguished Professor and Interim Director of the Institute for Sustainability (IfS) at the University of Surrey, leading transdisciplinary sustainability research. He also directs the Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) and heads the Nano-Electronics Centre (NEC), with over 160 researchers. His academic roles include Visiting Professorships at Dalian Technology University and Wuhan University of Technology. Silva holds numerous fellowships, including FREng (UK), FCAE (China), and is a CBE honoree.

Education: Completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Engineering at the University of Cambridge, with a Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Fellowship and affiliation to Clare College.

Research Focus: Nanotechnology, renewables, and large-area electronics with emphasis on solar cells (perovskite, organic), carbon nanomaterials, and energy sustainability. His work spans 700+ conference presentations, 680+ journal papers, 50 patents, and £50M+ in research funding. Key projects include the Surrey Solar Farm, EU-funded initiatives (SMARTONICS, CORNET), and development of self-powered wearable tech.

Awards: James Joule Medal (2018), Platinum Medal (IOM3, 2015), JJ Thompson Medal (IET, 2014), and Sri Lanka's Presidential Award (2016). Editor-in-Chief of Energy and Environmental Materials (2017–present).

Grants & Collaborations: Spearheaded £3M EU project for perovskite solar cells in IoT devices (2022), led £3M UK project on wearable energy harvesting. Collaborates internationally with academia and industries across 20+ countries.

Labs/Teams: Oversees the ATI and NEC, fostering innovation in nanotechnology and sustainability. Advisory roles include Sri Lanka's SLINTec and NANCO, and government science policy in Sri Lanka.
