About
Prof. S. Ramakrishnan is a Professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in the Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, where he leads the Macromolecular Design & Synthesis Group. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1988), M.Sc. from IIT Bombay (1982), and B.Sc. from SIES College, University of Bombay (1980).
His research spans innovative areas of polymer science:
- Conjugated Polymers: Designing PPV derivatives for controlled emission and energy transfer.
- Foldamers: Creating synthetic polymers that mimic biological folding.
- Hyperbranched Polymers: Developing materials for solid electrolytes and functional gels.
- Polymerizable Surfactants & Novel Polyethers: Engineering nanostructured materials and low-crystallinity PEO analogues.
He mentors a large cohort of graduate students and research associates, driving projects in advanced polymer synthesis and characterization.
Awards & Honors:
- Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2005)
- DAE-SRC Outstanding Investigator Award (2005)
- CRSI Bronze Medal (2002)
- Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences
His lab features specialized equipment including GPC, HPLC, DSC, and fluorescence spectrophotometers, supporting cutting-edge macromolecular research.
