Süreyya Bozkurt

Süreyya Bozkurt serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Basic Medicine at Istanbul Yeni Yüzyıl University Faculty of Medicine. With undergraduate training in Biology from Hacettepe University (1991) and a Master's in Fundamental Biotechnology from Ankara University (2005), she specializes in cancer cytogenetics and molecular oncology.

Her research focuses on cytogenetic abnormalities in hematologic malignancies, particularly:

• Rare chromosomal translocations in pediatric leukemia and lymphoma
• Mechanisms of imatinib resistance in chronic myeloid leukemia
• Epigenetic regulation of tumor suppressor genes
• Biomarker discovery in solid tumors through cell line models

Current projects investigate novel translocations like t(1;9) in Fanconi anemia and t(1;15)/t(1;21) in Burkitt lymphoma.

Analysis of her 30+ publications reveals strong emphasis on translational cytogenetics - connecting rare chromosomal findings to clinical outcomes. Recent work (2020-2023) shows expanding focus beyond hematology into solid tumor biomarkers (breast, lung, colon cancers) while maintaining core expertise in leukemia cytogenetics.

Her collaborative research involves:

• Clinical hematologists at Istanbul Medical Faculty hospitals
• Molecular biologists studying drug resistance mechanisms
• International cancer cytogenetics networks (implied by case reports)

Lab activities center on the Cancer Cytogenetics Research Laboratory, where students gain hands-on experience in karyotyping, gene expression analysis, and cell culture techniques using primary patient samples and established cancer cell lines.
