Dr. Søren Rysgaard is a Professor at the University of Manitoba's Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources, holding the Canada Excellence Research Chair Laureate title. He is affiliated with the Centre for Earth Observation Science. His research focuses on Arctic marine ecosystems, biogeochemistry, and climate change impacts.
Education:
- PhD in Biology, Aarhus University, Denmark (1995)
- MSc in Biology, Aarhus University, Denmark (1991)
Research Interests: Marine microbiology in Arctic sea ice, carbon/nutrient cycling, glacial-fjord-ocean interactions, and global change. Recent work emphasizes proglacial fjords, subglacial discharge dynamics, and geothermal heat flux effects on ice streams.
Publications: Focused on advancing understanding of Arctic oceanography, glaciology, and climate feedback mechanisms. Key themes include water mass dynamics, fjord-glacier interactions, and geothermal influences on ice stability.
Awards:
- Canada Excellence Research Chair Laureate
Advising: Supervising PhD student Esdoom Willcox. Active in graduate training on Arctic environmental systems.
Labs/Teams: Part of the Centre for Earth Observation Science, conducting fieldwork in Greenland and Arctic regions.
