About
Ryszard Horodecki is a Professor of theoretical physics affiliated with the University of Gdańsk and the International Centre for Theory of Quantum Technologies (ICTQT). He graduated with an MSc Eng in electronics and earned his PhD in theoretical physics, focusing on optical line broadening due to diatomic molecule collisions. In the 1980s, he specialized in the foundations of particle-wave dualism, later pioneering quantum information research in Poland. He co-established Gdańsk as a global quantum information hub through collaborations, notably with Professor Marek Żukowski.
His research spans quantum entanglement, quantum thermodynamics, and foundational physics. Key contributions include entanglement witnesses, bound entanglement, no-local-broadcasting theorem, and the theory of objectivity explaining classical features from quantum dynamics.
Honors and awards include the 2019 Scientific Award of the Polish Academy of Sciences, ERC Advanced Grant (2011), and the Johannes Hevelius Award (2008). He was elected Ordinary Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2019.
Horodecki led EU projects like EQUIP, QUPRODIS, and SCALA IP, and the ERC AdG QOLAPS (2012-2016). He founded the National Quantum Information Centre of Gdańsk (2007), uniting 7 Polish universities and 2 PAS institutes, and organized 10 international symposia.
