Ryan Shaw

Ryan Shaw is a Professor of Practice in History and Strategy at Arizona State University (ASU), where he also serves as Managing Director of Strategic Initiatives and Senior University Advisor. He works to strengthen ASU’s national security partnerships through initiatives like the Competitive Statecraft Initiative and Security & Defence PLuS, a collaboration with King’s College London and the University of New South Wales.

• Education: BS in American Politics (U.S. Military Academy at West Point), MA and PhD in History (Yale University).

His research focuses on grand strategy, strategic theory, competitive statecraft, irregular warfare, and 19th-century American military history. He edits Small Wars Journal and Inter Populum: The Journal of Irregular Warfare and Special Operations, and holds affiliations with New America (International Security Fellow) and the University Design Institute (Expert-in-Residence). His work bridges military history with contemporary strategic challenges, emphasizing organizational leadership and diplomatic history.
