Ryan R. Abrecht

Ryan R. Abrecht serves as Department Chair and Associate Professor of History at the University of San Diego, where he has taught since fall 2015. Specializing in ancient Mediterranean history and culture, he instructs undergraduate courses including The Ancient World, Greek Civilization, Roman Civilization, Late Antiquity, and Ancient History through Modern Fiction.

Dr. Abrecht's research examines social and religious history within the Roman Empire, with particular emphasis on immigration patterns, urban dynamics, and cross-cultural exchanges in frontier regions. His work investigates how imperialism transforms identities of both dominant and subjugated populations, employing comparative frameworks between Roman and Chinese imperial systems. Current projects expand his dissertation "My Neighbor the Barbarian: Immigrant Neighborhoods in Classical Athens, Imperial Rome, and Tang Chang'an" into a book analyzing ancient capitals as contested urban borderlands where spatial and social boundaries shaped communal identities.

As an educator, he champions interdisciplinary approaches and experiential learning through historical site visits. Dr. Abrecht maintains active student mentorship within the History department while pursuing research that bridges ancient historical analysis with contemporary relevance regarding migration, cultural exchange, and imperial legacies.
