About
Dr. Ryan Peters is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary and a Full Member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. He holds a PhD and B.A. in Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour from McMaster University (2013 and 2008). His research focuses on the neural basis of human movement, integrating physiological, behavioral, and computational techniques. He leads the Integrative Sensorimotor Neuroscience Laboratory and co-founded Vibratus Inc., a company developing wearable vibration technologies for neurological diagnostics and monitoring. His work addresses declines in somatosensory function in aging and neurological disorders, aiming to improve clinical assessment methods and rehabilitation strategies.
Dr. Peters specializes in microneurography, enabling direct recordings of human somatosensory neurons. His research streams include basic studies on fusimotor system dynamics and applied projects on wearable devices for remote health monitoring. He has contributed to understanding age-related sensory changes, postural control adaptations, and the neurophysiological impacts of combat sports. His innovations in vibration-based diagnostics offer novel solutions for conditions like diabetic neuropathy and post-chemotherapy sensory deficits.
In teaching, he instructs courses on sensorimotor neuroscience and advanced topics at the University of Calgary. His industry collaborations and academic leadership reflect a commitment to translating neuroscientific insights into practical healthcare applications.
