About
Dr Ryan Davey is a Lecturer in Sociology at Cardiff University's School of Social Sciences. Specializing in debt studies, ethnography, and critical policy analysis, his work explores the intersections of class inequality, gender, and state coercion. He is the author of *The Personal Life of Debt*, the first full ethnography of UK debt problems, which challenges stigmatizing narratives through fieldwork in southern England housing estates and debt adviser observations.
His research focuses on lived experiences of social transformation, including household debt dynamics, housing precarity, and the moral dimensions of financial exclusion. Dr Davey collaborates with economic justice campaigners, artists, and media outlets to translate academic insights into public discourse. Within the university, he serves as Deputy Senior Personal Tutor and member of the Gender and Sexuality Equalities Committee.
Notable contributions include analyzing 'defensive optimism' among indebted families and exposing how legal dispossession mechanisms perpetuate class-based marginalization. His interdisciplinary approach bridges sociology, anthropology, and policy studies, with recent work appearing at the Hay Festival and in media commentaries.
