Ruth Allarton serves as Head of the Department of Allied Health Professions at Sheffield Hallam University's College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences, a position she has held since the department's establishment in 2009. With over two decades at the university, she previously held leadership roles including Subject Group Leader for Physiotherapy and Head of Programme Area for Sport and Physiotherapy. Prior to joining Sheffield Hallam in 1999, Ruth worked 18 years as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist in the NHS, managing Bassetlaw's outpatient department and contributing to functional outcome measures research.
Her educational background includes professional physiotherapy qualifications and she is currently registered for a Doctorate investigating physiotherapists as first-contact practitioners for musculoskeletal issues in primary care. This doctoral work builds on her NHS clinical experience and academic leadership.
Ruth's research focuses on transforming Allied Health Professional (AHP) roles within healthcare systems, with particular emphasis on workforce development, primary care integration, and establishing AHPs as first-contact practitioners. She actively promotes AHP contributions to population health through strategic networking and national policy initiatives, maintaining expertise in musculoskeletal health and clinical outcome measurement.
Externally, Ruth chairs the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy's Educational Awards Panel and Charitable Trust, serves as External Examiner for UCLAN's MSc in Exercise Prescription and University of Hertfordshire's non-medical prescribing program, and chairs the CSP's Trent Board. She contributes to national policy as Department of Health steering group member for AHP prescribing competencies, while also serving as Partner Governor at Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust and Governor at Tuxford Academy.
