Rust M. Deming

Senior Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy and Senior Associate at the Centre for the Study of Global Japan. With a 38-year career in the U.S. Department of State, Mr. Deming specializes in Japanese and East Asian affairs, having held high-ranking diplomatic roles, including U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia and Director of the Office of Japanese Affairs. He later taught at the School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University, for over a decade.

• Graduate, National War College of the United States (1986)

Research Interests: Focuses on international relations, Japanese diplomacy, East Asian policy, and global strategic affairs, informed by decades of experience in U.S. foreign service and academic engagement.

Awards and Honors:

• Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays and Neck Ribbon (2014) from the Emperor of Japan
• Multiple State Department and Defense Department awards for distinguished service
