Russell Light

Russell Light is a Senior University Teacher at the School of Architecture and Landscape, University of Sheffield, where he has taught since 1987 while simultaneously running his architectural practice Ferenczi Design. His current roles include Alumni Engagement Coordinator and leader of Studio One for the MArch in Architecture program, with extensive experience coordinating degree courses and design studios across all academic levels.

Education:

• BA, Dip Arch in Architecture from Portsmouth Polytechnic (1978-1984)

His research centers on architectural theory, adaptive reuse of existing buildings, architectural drawing, and perspective, with publications examining Pliny the Younger's architectural legacy and Palladio's Villa Saraceno restoration. This work extends to historic preservation, sustainable design strategies involving green roofs and ground source heating, and cinematic approaches to spatial construction, reflecting his international conference presentations across Canada, Italy, India, and the United States.

Light's professional practice produces award-recognized small-scale domestic projects published in BD, Perspectives, ARQ, and Financial Times, often involving listed buildings and craft-based techniques. As Trustee of the South Yorkshire Building Preservation Trust, he actively contributes to conservation efforts while integrating field experiences from Venice Biennale and Rome excursions into Studio One's curriculum.
