Russell Cobb

Russell Cobb is an Associate Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta, where he also serves as Coordinator of the Media Studies Program and Director of Graduate Programs. His research focuses on American and Latin American history, Indigenous rights, media studies, and cultural criticism. He is the author of The Ghosts of Crook County (forthcoming 2024) and The Great Oklahoma Swindle (2022), which won the Director’s Special Merit Award from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. His work has appeared in venues like Slate, NPR, and The New York Times, and he hosts the radio show/podcast History X exploring understudied historical narratives.

Cobb’s scholarship spans topics including the Cuban Revolution’s influence on U.S. leftist movements, Venezuelan political mythology, and the paradoxes of authenticity in globalized cultures.
