University of Illinois Urbana-ChampaignAbout
Russ Giannetta is a Professor of Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's Department of Physics, part of The Grainger College of Engineering. He holds a PhD from Cornell University (1980) and has been at UIUC since 1993. His research focuses on superconductivity, particularly studying novel electronic materials such as copper oxides, iron-based compounds, and organic superconductors using high-precision techniques like radio frequency penetration depth measurements and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).
Key areas include understanding superconducting energy gaps, vortex motion, and the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism. Giannetta has pioneered methods to measure the London penetration depth with sub-nanometer precision, advancing insights into unconventional pairing mechanisms. Collaborations include work with Prof. C.P. Slichter on NMR studies of organic superconductors, exploring pseudo-gapped phases and spin dynamics.
Awarded the American Physical Society Fellowship (2007) and Xerox Faculty Research Award (2003), Giannetta has taught courses like PHYS 404 (Electronic Circuits) and advised 47 undergraduate researchers. His lab integrates cryogenics, thin-film fabrication, and advanced RF techniques to probe superconducting properties down to 0.3 K.
