About
Rupert Rainer is a Doctoral Fellow at the Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies (University of Erfurt), focusing on classical philology and Byzantine cultural history. His research centers on Paulus Silentiarius' Ekphrasis of Hagia Sophia, analyzing its literary techniques through Hartmut Rosa's resonance theory and examining connections to Homeric and Hellenistic poetic traditions.
The project investigates how the poem's vivid descriptions of the Hagia Sophia's architecture and decorations create emotional resonance, while exploring the work's place in late antique Greek epic poetry traditions. His work builds on prior studies of Nonnus of Panopolis and integrates modern research on ekphrastic representation.
