Dr. Rujie Sun is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) of Soft Electronics and Multiscale Medical Robotics at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) and the Digital Health & Biomedical Engineering Group (DHBE). He is also an academic visitor at the University of Oxford's Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics. Previously, he was a Research Associate in Molly Stevens' group at Imperial College London and conducted postdoctoral research at Northwestern University under John Rogers. His research focuses on developing next-generation medical devices integrating biosensing, actuation, therapy, and AI-assisted control, with applications in wearable/implantable bioelectronics, cardiovascular treatment, and neurotechnology.
Education: Ph.D. from the Bristol Composites Institute, University of Bristol (UK). Key research areas include flexible electronics, medical robotics, 3D printing, and intelligent metamaterials. He leads the Multiscale Intelligent Biodevices Lab, which has published over 30 papers in top journals like Nature Chemistry, Nature Biomedical Engineering, and Advanced Materials, with over 2000 citations.
Current projects include SMARTPatch for cardiac repair, reconfigurable microrobot swarms for drug delivery, and 4D-printed soft actuators. He supervises multiple PhD students and collaborates with institutions like Southampton's NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and the Centre for Flexible Electronics and E-Textiles (C-FLEET). His work bridges robotics, materials science, and clinical applications, emphasizing personalized medicine and closed-loop AI systems.
