Rubén Ruiz-Rufino is an Associate Professor in Comparative Politics at King's College London's Department of Political Economy, within the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. His research focuses on political institutions, electoral systems, and globalization's impact on democracies. He holds a PhD from the Juan March Institute and an MSc from the University of Edinburgh. Previously, he held postdoctoral fellowships at the European University Institute, the Institute of Politics and Public Goods (IPP-CSIC), and the Center for Political and Constitutional Studies (CEPC).
Research interests include measuring electoral systems, political representation, and the effects of financial crises on democratic stability. He employs quantitative and quasi-experimental methods, with notable work on electoral fraud, international observation missions, and the Eurozone crisis's political consequences. His publications span peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, including the 2025 book *Democracy under strain*.
Ruiz-Rufino's research has been recognized with the 2018 Lawrence Longley Award for his article on election monitoring. He supervises PhD students on topics like electoral violence, globalisation's political effects, and party system dynamics.
