Rotem Avneri Meir

Dr. Rotem Avneri Meir serves as a Visiting Fellow in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the Classics at Harvard University, and as a Doctoral Researcher at the Academy of Finland's Centre of Excellence in Ancient Near Eastern Empires (ANEE) at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Arts, Department of World Cultures.

His research focuses on the social history of Hellenistic Judea, examining the establishment of Hasmonean dynastic rule through its brokerage with the Seleucid Empire and responses within contemporary Jewish society. His work spans ancient political structures, biblical interpretation, and the intersection of Jewish history with Hellenistic culture.

Avneri Meir has published significant research on Seleucid-Judean relations and Hasmonean chronology, with articles appearing in Vetus Testamentum and other prestigious journals. His scholarship demonstrates expertise in analyzing historical transitions through textual and political evidence.

Avneri Meir holds a B.A. in History and Philosophy and an M.A. in Ancient History from Tel Aviv University. His doctoral dissertation at the University of Helsinki examines "The Rise of the Hasmonean Dynasty on the Margins of the Seleucid Empire." He maintains active research collaborations through the Academy of Finland's Centre of Excellence in Ancient Near Eastern Empires, contributing to interdisciplinary projects on ancient empires and their peripheries.
