About
Ross M. Boyce, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and holds a dual appointment as Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Disease. He serves as a Faculty Fellow at the Carolina Population Center and is a Member of the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Boyce's research centers on spatial epidemiology of vector-borne diseases with dual geographic focus: malaria and related pathogens in East African rural communities, and tick/mosquito-borne diseases including Lyme disease, dengue, rickettsia, and ehrlichia in North Carolina. His work emphasizes novel prevention strategies and vector control through field-based interventions.
Analysis of his 2016-2021 publications reveals sustained focus on malaria dynamics in Uganda, particularly flood-related transmission patterns and chemoprevention efficacy, while expanding into SARS-CoV-2 disparity research and diagnostic optimization for resource-limited settings.
Dr. Boyce has received significant recognition including:
- Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Clinician Scientist Development Award (2021)
- Best Clinical Article of the Year from American Journal of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (2018)
- Elsevier Clinical Research Award at ASTMH Annual Meeting (2015)
- Outstanding Resident Research Award from MGH Internal Medicine (2015)
- Okeke Prize & William Simpson Prize from London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (2011)
- Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society (2010)
As principal investigator, he directs research funded by National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His work involves extensive cross-disciplinary collaboration though specific student advisees aren't publicly listed.
He founded and leads the Vector-Borne Disease Epidemiology, Ecology, and Response (VEER) Hub, which coordinates statewide surveillance and intervention efforts for tick- and mosquito-borne diseases in North Carolina.
