Ronald R. Sundstrom

Ronald R. Sundstrom is Professor of Philosophy at the University of San Francisco (College of Arts and Sciences), where he also serves as a member of the African American Studies program, teaches for the Honors College, and acts as Humanities Advisor for the SF Urban Film Festival. His work intersects philosophy with pressing social issues.

His research focuses on philosophy of race (racism, xenophobia, mixed-race identity), political philosophy (social justice, spatial arrangements), and urban policy (gentrification, integration). He has extensively analyzed Frederick Douglass' political thought and critiqued colorblind ideology.

Notable works include the books Just Shelter (2023) on racial reconstruction and urban equity, and The Browning of America (2008) on racial demographics and social justice evasion. His 2018 chapter explores race consciousness tensions in MLK Jr.'s philosophy, while 2017 and 2014 works examine mixed-race politics and xenophobic racism respectively.
