About
Romane Joly is a doctoral student and ATER (temporary academic) at the Institute of Urban Planning and Regional Development (IUAR), Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Strasbourg, and a member of the SAGE Laboratory (Sociétés, acteurs, gouvernement en Europe). She is conducting a joint international PhD under the supervision of Philippe Hamman (University of Strasbourg) and Philipp Späth (University of Freiburg), focusing on the socio-spatial production of dairy hinterlands in the Upper Rhine region.
Her research interests lie at the intersection of urban sociology, human geography, and food system governance. She investigates how urban supply chains—particularly dairy—shape rural-urban relations, territorial identities, and spatial forms. Her work emphasizes the material and social dynamics of food flows, peri-urban transformations, and the political ecology of urban provisioning.
The recent publications and conference presentations highlight a consistent focus on urban supply chains, food governance, and the socio-spatial organization of agricultural hinterlands. Her work combines qualitative fieldwork, ethnographic methods, and spatial analysis to understand how cities depend on and reshape their surrounding territories. Themes include transboundary food systems, urban-rural linkages, and democratic governance of food.
Romane Joly is actively involved in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, offering courses in urban policies, political sociology, urban anthropology, and sustainable development. She has presented her research at major national and international forums in sociology, geography, and urban planning.
She is a member of the RT9 (Sociology of the Urban and Territories) working group of the French Association of Sociology (AFS), reflecting her engagement with critical urban scholarship.
