Rolf PETRI is a Full Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Ca' Foscari University of Venice. He holds a Political Science degree from Philipps-University Marburg (1982) and a doctorate in History and Civilization from the European University Institute in Florence (1988). His research focuses on economic and political history, particularly in Italy and Germany, and the conceptual history of identity, ideology, and the Mediterranean.
He has coordinated major projects like the EU-funded 'Darker Shades of Black' (2020-23) and the 'Spaces of Expectation' initiative (2014-18), exploring regional identities and historical imagination. His editorial roles include serving on the boards of Memoria e Ricerca and Historien.
Teaching includes courses on Contemporary History and European Economic History. His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and articles on topics like war and peace in Europe, Mediterranean geopolitics, and Western ideological history.
Notable research lines include the history of emotions, transnational intellectual history, and the historiography of European integration. He has held visiting positions at Leipzig University and Södertörn University, and contributed to national/international research networks.
