About
Prof. Dr. Roland Span is a Professor and Chair of Thermodynamics at Ruhr University Bochum since 2006. Previously, he held positions at the University of Paderborn (2002–2006) and ALSTOM Power Technology (2001–2002). His academic journey includes a doctorate (1992) and habilitation (1999) from Ruhr University Bochum, followed by leadership of the 'Multiparameter Equations of State' research group under Prof. Wagner (1993–2000).
Research focuses on thermodynamic modeling for energy systems, carbon capture, and hydrogen economy. Notable achievements include the 2017 Applied Energy Award for a review paper and the 2019 SINTEF/NTNU CCS Award for CO₂ emissions reduction work. He leads the ERC Advanced Grant-funded project 'Laying the Foundations for a Hydrogen Economy' (2022+), aiming to develop material data models for hydrogen as an energy carrier.
Honors and grants include the ERC Advanced Grant 2022. His career spans academia and industry, with contributions to gas turbine research and energy technologies. Current research emphasizes scaling hydrogen production and advancing carbon capture methodologies.
