Rohan Maitzen

Rohan Maitzen is an Associate Professor of English at Dalhousie University, serving as a King’s-Dalhousie Carnegie Professor within the Joint Faculty. His research focuses on Victorian literature, gender studies, and ethical criticism, with notable works analyzing intersections between historical writing and fiction in 19th-century Britain. He has also explored contemporary ethical criticism and its ties to Victorian literary theory, as well as bridging academic and public literary discourse through blogging and online platforms like Open Letters Monthly.

Dr. Maitzen earned his BA (Honors English and History) from the University of British Columbia, followed by MA and PhD in English at Cornell University. His teaching spans Victorian literature, detective fiction, and interdisciplinary courses emphasizing close reading and critical engagement. He has supervised numerous graduate theses on topics ranging from Jane Austen’s moral frameworks to 19th-century anti-revolutionary literature.

Awarded the Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities (1990) and a Commonwealth Scholarship (1990, declined), his scholarly contributions include editing Victorian critical essays and authoring works on George Eliot’s philosophical fiction. His outreach initiatives include Middlemarch for Book Clubs, a resource to promote engagement with Victorian classics.
