Rodrigo Adem is Assistant Professor in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University. His research examines early Islamic intellectual history with focus on epistemology, hermeneutics, and scholarly authority in classical Islamic thought. He holds a PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from University of Chicago.
Professor Adem's current book project Necessary Proof analyzes scholarly approaches to traditional authority in medieval Islamic scholarship. His social history research focuses on urban development in medieval Damascus as a site for knowledge production and identity formation.
He teaches courses including Introduction to Islamic Civilization, Knowledge and Power in Classical Islamic Thought, and Arabo-Islamic Historiography. His work engages with critical theory, philosophy, and sociology of knowledge in Islamic intellectual traditions.
