Rocco Chiou is a Lecturer in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Surrey, School of Psychology. Starting September 2025, he will join Birkbeck, University of London as a Lecturer in Psychology. His research focuses on neural representations of conceptual knowledge, including semantic memory, the default-mode network, and multisensory perception. He employs functional MRI and brain stimulation to explore interactions between brain regions.
Key research streams include the role of anterior temporal lobes and angular gyri in conceptual knowledge representation, as well as creativity, curiosity, and sensory integration. Over 25 peer-reviewed articles highlight his contributions to understanding semantic control systems, cognitive neuroscience, and neuroimaging.
Future work emphasizes bridging semantic cognition and numerical cognition, with ongoing projects on cortical gradients and sensory integration. He is open to supervising PhD students in these areas.
