Robin Williams

Robin Williams serves as Professor and Director of the Institute for the Study of Science, Technology and Innovation (ISSTI) within the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. His research spans social shaping of technology, digital health transformation, and innovation policy, with significant contributions to understanding enterprise systems, e-health infrastructure, and AI governance. He co-directs Innogen, the ESRC Centre for Socio-Economic Research on Innovation in Genomics, and has secured over 50 external research awards from EU and UK research councils.

Williams' research focuses on the social shaping of technology, particularly examining how actors influence ICT design and implementation. Key areas include enterprise systems, e-prescribing in hospitals, interoperability standards for mobile broadband, and AI governance in healthcare. His 'Biography of Artefacts' framework explores co-evolution of technologies and practices.
