Carnegie Mellon UniversityAbout
Roberto R. Gil is a Research Professor and Director of the NMR Center at Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Chemistry (Mellon College of Science). He holds a PhD in Chemistry from the Córdoba National University, Argentina (1989), and a BS/MS in Organic Chemistry from the same institution (1983). His research focuses on advanced NMR methodologies for analyzing small molecules in anisotropic media, including residual dipolar coupling (RDC), residual chemical shift anisotropy (RCSA), and deuterium residual quadrupolar coupling (RQC). He has pioneered the development of polymer gels as alignment media for NMR analysis and contributed to structural elucidation of natural products, nucleic acids, and synthetic polymers.
Key projects include the creation of flexible aligning gels for peptide/small molecule analysis and the application of CASE-3D (Computer-Assisted 3D Structure Elucidation) for natural product characterization. Gil has served as Editor-in-Chief of Magnetic Resonance in Chemistry since 2023 and has been recognized with awards such as the 1996 Top Ten Youngsters of the Year. His work spans collaborations on gold nanocluster magnetism, anti-neuroinflammatory compounds, and catalyst-transfer polymerization.
Publications highlight innovations in NMR data interpretation, including reference-free NOE analysis and solvent effects on molecular conformation. His research integrates computational methods with experimental NMR to address structural challenges in organic, medicinal, and materials chemistry.
