Robert Wisnovsky

Robert Wisnovsky is a James McGill Professor of Islamic Philosophy at the Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University. He previously held positions at Harvard University (1996-2004) as Assistant and Associate Professor of Islamic Intellectual History. His research focuses on Islamic philosophy, particularly Avicenna’s legacy, metaphysical theories, and medieval textual transmission.

Research interests include:

• Avicenna’s metaphysics and soul theory
• Kalām-theological integration of Avicennian concepts
• Transmission of Greek philosophical texts to Arabic
• Rediscovery of lost works by Yaḥyā ibn ʿAdī
• Development of Optical Shape Recognition software for Arabic manuscripts

His recent articles (2015-2022) explore Avicennian metaphysics, medieval textual practices, and cross-cultural philosophical exchange. Scientific awards include major grants from the John Templeton Foundation, Canada Foundation for Innovation, and SSHRC. He has supervised 21 PhD students and 9 MA students in Islamic intellectual history and textual studies.
