About
Robert Williams serves as the Governor's Chair for Computational Genomics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) since 2009, where he chairs the Department of Genetics, Genomics and Informatics and directs the Center for Integrative and Translational Genomics (CITG), catalyzing statewide research in human and experimental genetics.
Williams holds a bachelor's degree in neuroscience from the University of California, Santa Cruz, a doctorate in physiology from the University of California, Davis, and completed postdoctoral work in developmental neurobiology at Yale University before joining UTHSC in 1989.
His research pioneers computational genomics for precision medicine using rodent models (BXD mice and Hybrid Rat Diversity Panel) to study complex polygenic diseases including diabetes, substance use disorders, and Alzheimer's disease. He developed GeneNetwork.org, an open-source platform analyzing genetic networks to predict individualized treatments through 40+ years of legacy rodent data.
Williams received UTHSC's highest systemwide honor for research leadership:
- UT President's Award (Discover category, 2020) recognizing his national/international contributions to bioinformatics and genetics over three decades
As CITG director, he secured funding to establish UTHSC's world-class genetics department and co-founded the international Complex Trait Community, uniting geneticists, bioinformaticians, and statisticians for collaborative disease research. His leadership enables predictive modeling of gene-environment interactions for aging, addiction, and neurological disorders.
Williams directs both CITG and the Complex Trait Community, providing infrastructure for statewide genomics research and global scientific collaboration through resources like GeneNetwork.org.
