Robert W. Gehl

Robert W. Gehl is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication & Media Studies at York University, where he holds the Ontario Research Chair in Digital Governance for Social Justice. A Fulbright scholar and award-winning author, his research examines contemporary communication technologies with focus on alternative social media, digital governance, and manipulative communication practices.

His research investigates the social and political implications of digital platforms, including network cultures, dark web technologies, and social media manipulation. Gehl's work combines software studies with critical theory to analyze power structures in digital environments.

Publications consistently address themes of platform legitimacy, social media alternatives, and the evolution of digital manipulation. Recent scholarship focuses on decentralized platforms as responses to commercial social media monopolies.

Gehl teaches courses in communication technology, political economy of communication, and web design. He actively supervises graduate students researching alternative internet infrastructures and social media futures.
