Robert T Ball, MD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Medicine, with additional adjunct appointments at MUSC and the College of Charleston. His career spans clinical practice, public health leadership, and academia with a focus on Infectious Diseases and Public Health Sciences.
Dr. Ball received his MD from MUSC in 1970 and later earned an MPH from the University of South Carolina. His professional journey includes an Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Disease fellowship at MUSC, followed by private practice specializing in HIV/AIDS care where he became the first physician to diagnose and report AIDS in South Carolina (1982).
A pioneer in infectious disease epidemiology, Dr. Ball's research centers on Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs), bioterrorism preparedness, and public health responses to pandemics including influenza. He has directed significant initiatives such as the SC Ryan White AIDS Program, Harmful Algal Bloom Program, and Hepatitis C program during his tenure at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).
His scientific recognition includes the 2014 South Carolina Medical Association CME Educator of the Year award.
Dr. Ball served as Medical Director for Infectious Diseases at SC DHEC until 2012, co-founded the SC and Charleston Infectious Disease Societies, and held leadership roles including President of the SC Infectious Disease Society and service on the State Board of Medical Examiners. He continues to provide educational inservices and Grand Rounds at MUSC on public health topics, maintaining active involvement in community health initiatives despite retiring from DHEC.
