Robert Sipchen

Robert Sipchen is a Visiting Full Professor in the College Writing Program at Occidental College, where he has been appointed since 1997. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Santa Barbara.

As a seasoned journalist and communications professional, Sipchen teaches news writing, communications theory and practice, and narrative nonfiction. His academic work intersects with practical journalism, environmental advocacy, and educational commentary.

Sipchen’s career highlights include sharing three Pulitzer Prizes: the 2002 Pulitzer for Editorial Writing (with Alex Raksin), the 2016 Pulitzer for Team Coverage of the San Bernardino Terrorist Attack, and the 1992 Pulitzer for Team Coverage of the Los Angeles Riots. He also received the Sigma Delta Chi award for editorial writing in 2002. These accolades underscore his contributions to investigative journalism and public discourse.

His professional journey includes pivotal roles at the Los Angeles Times, where he served as a reporter, columnist, blogger, and editor over decades. He also held leadership positions such as Communications Director for the Sierra Club and Editor-in-Chief of SIERRA magazine, blending journalism with environmental advocacy.
